This is the time of year when an author casts his mind back over the previous twelve months, thinks fondly of the highlights, winces as he remembers the embarrassing moments (I should never have even attempted to autograph that reader's pet worm) and most importantly tries to remember where he left his electric toothbrush recharger. I was lucky in 2005, I had a lot of highlights, including writing and publishing Once and Aristotle's Nostril, visiting 50 or so schools in Australia and Britain, helping out with the MS Readathon, having books published in France, Japan, Indonesia, Germany, the United Arab Emirates, Finland and Portugal as well as all the usual overseas English language places, doing some life-changing research, reading all the emails I get sent via the Visitor's Page, moving house, and discovering that worm wee is dry-cleanable. I wrote about many of these highlights in the other G'days this year, and they're available if you want to cast your mind back fondly over them. (I'm mostly directing this to my mother.) One highlight that I haven't mentioned in a G'day happened on 29 November. Somewhat nervously I took part in an online chat with 24 schools organised by the NSW Department of Education. I was nervous because I'd never done an online chat before and the internet can be a scary place, particularly for someone like me who once tried to buy an electric toothbrush recharger online and ended up with a fruitcake. But I needn't have worried. The department online chat experts had things well under control, the kids in the school asked brilliant questions, and I had a great time answering them, typing faster than I ever had before with both of my typing fingers at the same time. I hope your year had heaps of highlights too, with lots more waiting for you in 2006. Until next time, oo-roo and happy reading,
