They say a change is as good as a holiday, and this summer instead of a holiday I’m having a change. I’m writing some short stories. Never done it before, and after 25 novels it’s an exciting experience. It’s the speed. A first draft in three days instead of three months for a novel. Sometimes I feel I should be writing with a crash helmet on. I love novels and plan to write lots more, but there’s such freedom in being able to explore an idea without worrying if it’ll fill a book on its own. I reckon I can fit at least 12 stories in a book – that’s at least 12 different ideas. Some of them can be silly, some serious, some so crazy they scare me. But it’s OK because short stories make me feel more daring. Yep, definitely a crash helmet. I’ve just had an idea for another one – a boy trying to scatter his cricket-mad grandad’s ashes on the pitch in the middle of a test match. Must go and give it a whirl. Oo-roo and happy reading,
